Ole George, Lava Man in WALK-OFF

It is being billed as a CHALLENGE laid down by Desron ‘Lava Man’ Rodriguez, who became a household name for his daring hikes to the La Soufrière volcano even as it erupted, to Earl ‘Ole George’ Daniel, dubbed the record holder for the longest continuous walk, i.e., walking 8 days around Prospect Park in Brooklyn New York.  However, THE VINCENTIAN understands that it was not originally intended to be a CHALLENGE as such, but after realizing that he may have found himself cornered during a radio programme about two months ago, that involved an exchange between he and ‘Ole George, ‘Lava Man’ accepted what he saw as an invitation to face off against ‘Ole George’ in a walk until one man drops. According to ‘Lava Man’ it has always been his intention to “walk from one end of St. Vincent to the other… from Fancy to Richmond.”  The walk-off with Ole George may just have hastened his plan to do so with the route demarcated as from Kingstown, to Fancy then to Fitz Hughes and back, and back, until……. A date of November 24, a shift from the originally advertised November 25 has been suggested as the day when the walk gets going, though this (date) is yet to be confirmed. While ‘Lava Man’ aims to “outwalk Ole George and take his crown”, ‘Ole George’ is not daunted by the enthusiasm of his “challenge,” and in order to ensure that he secures his champion title he has begun a vigorous (physical) training regimen. ‘Ole George’ is so gearing to go that he hinted it is very possible Vincentians might see a record, i.e. going beyond his eight days of no-sleep walk. According to ‘Ole George’, the event aims to raise awareness of the status of differently abled persons, and to raise funds to address their needs. And while ‘Ole George” is in training, Paradise Adventures, a land and sea tour company of which ‘Lava Man’ is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer, is inviting the public to join them in a ‘Heroes for the Mission Walk’ from Fancy to Kingstown – a distance of 54 kilometers – on October 1, 2022. Another ‘Heroes for the Mission Wal’ is planned for October 26, this time from Richmond to Kingstown. And as the two men take to differing ‘means to the same end’ as far as preparation is concerned, one thing is certain: there’s no indication of any one of them backing down before the date for the walk-off.
